Sauder Schelkopf is investigating a potential class action lawsuit on behalf of consumers who used FreeStyle Libre glucose monitor products. It has been alleged that more than 4.2 million FreeStyle Libre readers contain a defect in the readers’ lithium-ion batteries, like the kinds used in mobile phones and many other handheld electronic devices, which have the potential for battery swelling, leakage, or extreme overheating. CNN reported in part: “Users have reported that FreeStyle Libre batteries swelled, overheated, and, in some cases, generated sparks or caused a fire. The manufacturer, Abbott, says there have been 206 incidents related to these monitors since 2014. But no users have died due to the problem, nor have there been any serious adverse health consequences.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class 1 recall.
