On January 16, 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced that Block, Inc., the operator of Cash App, has been ordered to pay up to $175 million due to significant failures in protecting users from fraud. This includes up to $120 million in refunds to affected consumers and a $55 million penalty to the CFPB’s victims relief fund. consumerfinance.gov

The CFPB’s investigation revealed that Block employed weak security protocols, failed to adequately investigate and resolve disputes regarding unauthorized transactions, and directed users to seek assistance from their banks, only to subsequently deny these claims. Additionally, Block suppressed users from seeking help to reduce its own costs. Block has agreed to implement corrective measures, including establishing 24-hour live customer service and thoroughly investigating unauthorized transactions to provide timely refunds where appropriate.
