Did Technical Failures During the Bar Exam Impact Your Score?

The revamped California bar exam faced technical failures, delays, and questionable content, leaving test takers frustrated and uncertain about their futures. The exam, introduced in February 2025, was administered digitally by Meazure Learning and featured questions written by Kaplan North America.

Test takers reported glitches, access issues, freezing screens, and missing functionality, with some unable to take the test at all. The exam’s structure and wording deviated significantly from past versions, leaving many unprepared. These issues have led to a class-action lawsuit against Meazure Learning and an inquiry by state lawmakers.

The California State Bar, which had projected $3.8 million in cost savings from the new exam, is now under fire for its lack of oversight. Critics, including UC Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, have demanded provisional licenses for affected candidates and a return to the previous exam format.

With job offers and financial stability on the line, some candidates say they cannot afford to wait until July for the next test. The state bar has acknowledged failures and is considering score adjustments, but for many, the damage has already been done.
