Sauder Schelkopf is investigating Uponor PEX plumbing failures. PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a type of plastic tubing that is used in both plumbing and heating applications. PEX has been installed in the United States over the last 10 to 15 years. Because of its ease of installation, reliability, and relatively low cost, PEX is continuously growing in popularity. PEX, however, has its downside. Extreme bends and kinks may place high local stress on the wall of the pipe making it susceptible oxidative degradation. Some PEX manufacturers may use processes that are not uniform in composition. Some PEX may quickly degrade and become brittle when exposed to hot chlorinated water.
