Sauder Schelkopf has filed a class action lawsuit against PowerSchool Holdings, Inc. and PowerSchool Group LLC following a massive data breach that exposed the sensitive personal and health information of more than 60 million individuals, including students, teachers, and guardians.
PowerSchool, the leading provider of cloud-based education software in North America, was hacked between December 19 and December 28, 2024. The breach was discovered on December 28, 2024, after cybercriminals infiltrated the company’s customer support portal and accessed its school information system (SIS), which stores student records, grades, attendance, and personal health information.
The compromised data reportedly includes:
- Social Security numbers
- Dates of birth
- Addresses, phone numbers, and emails
- Tax identification numbers
- Health records, including medical conditions and prescription information
- Photo identification and financial details
Despite PowerSchool’s claims of industry-leading security measures, the lawsuit alleges that the company failed to implement adequate data protection protocols, leaving millions of individuals—many of them minors—vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.
The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, seeks compensatory and statutory damages, as well as injunctive relief to compel PowerSchool to improve its cybersecurity measures and provide credit monitoring, identity theft insurance, and fraud remediation services for all impacted individuals.
