Sauder Schelkopf is investigating allegations that SteelSeries Arctis Pro headsets are defective in that they are prone to cracking easily. This occurs when the piece of the headset that allows the earpiece to move is stiff at the headband joint to the extent that it places too much force on that joint so that it cracks. Once that occurs, a user’s headset fit may be affected, or the earpiece may break off entirely.
Compounding the issue with the potential defect, Steelseries often either does not honor warranty claims for the headsets, since it claims that the warranty only covers manufacturing defects, not design defects. In other instances, Steelseries replaces the headphones while they are within the one-year warranty period (though they make the warranty process very difficult). However, the replacement headphones contain the same defect, and the warranty period is tied to the original purchase data, not the date the customer received the replacement. Some consumers have been told that their warranty claims would only be honored after they destroyed their devices (and proved that), but then the company either failed to honor the warranty claim or only provided a small voucher that would not cover replacement headsets. Some consumers had headsets that broke after two years of normal use, so their warranty claims were not considered at all.
