Sauder Schelkopf is investigating allegations that Roomba i7 robot vacuum cleaners, manufactured by iRobot, are defective in that they are prone to stop working after consumers operate their Roomba i7 vacuums for a short time after purchase (i.e., weeks or months). When that happens, the appliances produce an error code, E26, advising consumers that they need to clean the Roomba’s bin and add a new filter. Replacing the filter sometimes resolves the issue, but often the device stops working again and another new filter is needed (which also may need to be replaced).
To address Error 26, iRobot advises consumers that the error means that the vacuum is experiencing insufficient airflow, and that they need to clean or replace the bin filter, and then try to run the robot again, rebooting it if necessary. Then, if the error persists, “the Cleaning Head Module will need to be replaced.” In response to some consumers’ complaints, Roomba sends out replacement cleaning head units for free. However, customers still receive the same “Error 26” problems with the replacement parts and often need to order additional parts. Once the one-year warranty period ends and the problem persists, consumers are stuck with a mostly unusable appliance.
