Sauder Schelkopf is investigating complaints about significantly increased utility bills from Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) related to the Weather Normalization Adjustment (WNA) clause. The clause includes a formula that calculates what the company will charge customers “during the period of October 1 through May 31 of each year for each billing cycle” based on the normal versus actual used energy. Customers have alleged they received bills that included WNA charges as high as $200, which The Philadelphia Inquirer reported was 85% of what the customer owed overall. The current charges for the Weather Normalization Adjustment have surprised PGW customers who typically have paid much less for their energy in the past and allege that the adjustment is inflated.
