Sauder Schelkopf is investigating potential litigation against BioLab, which operates a factory in Conyers, Georgia. The factory primarily manufactures chemicals for pools and spas, mainly chlorine-based products. On September 29, 2024, a fire started in the facility. Water from the building’s sprinkler system mixed with the chemicals, aerosolizing the fumes. Rockdale County was placed under a shelter-in-place order, with residents around metro Atlanta reporting the smell of chlorine in the air. Some residents east of Atlanta were evacuated and others told to shelter in place to avoid contaminants from a chemical plant fire.

Sauder Schelkopf and co-counsel reached a $10.3 million settlement on behalf of businesses impacted by a massive power outage and evacuation caused by a bridge builder on the Outer Banks. Joe Sauder also has a history of environmental litigation where he assisted with the trial of the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant in Colorado, which ultimately resulted in a $375 million settlement.
