IMPORTANT UPDATE: National Public Data Files for Bankruptcy and Shuts Down

National Public Data (NPD), a data broker specializing in background checks, has ceased operations following a significant data breach that exposed approximately 2.9 billion records containing sensitive information of up to 170 million individuals. The breach, initiated by a hacker known as “USDoD” in December 2023, led to the alleged unauthorized access and subsequent sale of personal data, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and details about relatives. securityboulevard.com

Multiple class-action lawsuits were filed against NPD in response to the breach, alleging negligence in safeguarding personal information. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2024. However, the bankruptcy filing was dismissed later that month.

By December 2024, NPD officially shut down after two decades in the data industry, leaving a notice informing the public of its closure on its website.
