Sauder Schelkopf is investigating potential litigation relating to public allegations of sexual and physical abuse – Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents, also known as, Cumberland Academy, in Kent, Virginia.
Cumberland Hospital stated mission includes “to provide integrated medical, rehabilitative, behavioral, and educational services for young people who, because of the complexity of challenges they face, are considered difficult to treat.”
It has been alleged that a former doctor at the facility was accused of abuse and neglect at the New Kent facility. The former doctor was reportedly at the facility from 1996 until February 2020 (according to his LinkedIn page). The doctor’s attorney reportedly gave a statement denying all of the allegations.
In February 2020, CBS 6 reported that “[a]ccording to the Virginia Board of Medicine’s website, the doctor of 40 years has a clean record.”
In a statement, Cumberland Hospital CEO Gay Brooks reportedly said that the doctor is an independent physician on staff at Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents.
“He has never been employed by either Cumberland Hospital or UHS,” Gay wrote. “Cumberland Hospital does contract with [the doctor’s] group practice [. . . .] on an independent contractor basis for medical direction and patient care services.”
In February 2020, a former Cumberland Hospital psychotherapist was charged with sex crimes.
Cumberland Hospital CEO Gay Brooks reportedly told CBS 6 that the psychotherapist voluntarily resigned from the hospital in September 2019.
“We only became aware of the allegations against him after he had resigned. We offer our sympathies to any victim of child abuse, including the alleged victim in this indictment, and will continue to cooperate fully in any investigation of [the psychotherapist’s] conduct at Cumberland Hospital,” Brooks wrote in a statement.
These are only allegations and have not at this time been proven in court.
