Sauder Schelkopf is investigating a widespread data breach involving Cleo Communications, Inc., a software company that provides secure data transfer and integration services for numerous organizations across the country. Cleo suffered a ransomware attack in late 2024 that exposed sensitive personal information entrusted to it by a wide range of its clients.
This is not an isolated breach. According to reports, the incident was allegedly part of a “hub-and-spoke” style cyberattack, where Cleo (the “hub”) was targeted, resulting in the unauthorized access and exfiltration of data belonging to multiple “spoke” clients—including Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and potentially many others. The Cl0p ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack and listed impacted organizations on the dark web.
The compromised data may include:
- Names
- Dates of birth
- Gender
- Internal ID numbers (e.g., student IDs)
- Medicaid ID numbers and eligibility dates (in some cases)
Cleo stores data on behalf of companies and institutions in various sectors—including education, healthcare, logistics, and business-to-business services. If your information was stored by one of Cleo’s clients, your personal data may have been impacted.
Despite the sensitivity of the exposed information, individuals may not yet have been notified, and the full scope of the breach is still unfolding.
Know Your Rights
If you received a notification about the Cleo breach—or believe your information may have been exposed—you may be entitled to legal recourse. Victims of data breaches often face a serious risk of identity theft, financial fraud, and misuse of government or insurance benefits.
