Sauder Schelkopf is investigating the data breach reported by SITA’s Horizon Passenger Service System, which is used by airlines to manage ticketing and reservations. SITA is among the largest IT providers in the passenger airline ecosystem. Data breaches occur when an unauthorized entry of a company’s database allows hackers to access data, including social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank information, driver’s license numbers, medical records, and other sensitive information. SITA issued a press release which stated in part: “SITA confirms that it was the victim of a cyber-attack, leading to a data security incident involving certain passenger data that was stored on SITA Passenger Service System (US) Inc. servers. Passenger Service System (US) Inc. (“SITA PSS”) operates passenger processing systems for airlines.
