Sauder Schelkopf LLC is investigating a potential class action lawsuit against Porsche related to a defect in its electric and plug-in hybrid models—Taycan, Cayenne E-Hybrid, and Panamera 4 E-Hybrid—where high temperatures from the high charging current can cause heat damage to the electrical socket in the vehicle. Porsche has offered to limit the default current charging setting to 50% on Porsche Mobile Chargers thereby increasing the charge time.
Porsche allegedly sent emails and letters to owners of these vehicles explaining the following:
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) has developed an update to the Porsche Mobile charger for your E-hybrid or Taycan vehicle. We are contacting you because this update is now available to you free at your Porsche Dealer.
What is the issue?
High temperatures can occur in the plug socket when charging the vehicle using the Porsche Mobile Charger in conjunction with NEMA industrial plugs, due to the higher charging current. In certain situations, this can lead to heat damage to the electrical socket.
Overheating while the vehicles are charging—often overnight while owners are sleeping—creates a dangerous safety hazard and can result in damage to these vehicles. Rather than fix the defect, Porsche requires owners to bring their vehicles to Porsche dealerships, where the “Dealer will limit the default current charging setting to 50% on your Porsche Mobile Charger.” That results in doubling the amount of time it takes to charge these vehicles.
If you are a current or former owner of a Porsche Taycan, Cayenne E-Hybrid, and Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and have experienced overheating while charging your vehicle or have taken your vehicle to a Porsche dealer and had your charging power reduced, please complete the form on this page for more information.
